Subject 3. Climate Change History, Measurement & Causes
This group of five Lessons is mainly about climate cycles and how they and not CO2 are ultimately responsible for the fluctuations in our climate that had us panic-stricken in the 1970's because of global cooling and now has us panic-stricken because of global warming. I'm afraid we never learn!
Lesson 13. Topics:
Climate Cycles & Oscillations, Their Effect on Today's Climate, Selection of Cycles to be Discussed in Detail, El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), La Nada, La Nina, El Nino, Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), Causes of IOD, Negative Phase, Positive Phase, Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Warm PDO, Cold PDO, History of the PDO and its Effect on World Climate, Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), Factors that Drive the Phases of the AMO, The Effects of the AMO on the World's Climate Warm Phase, Effects Cool Phase, Effects Climate Cycles, Their Effect on Today's Climate
Lesson Summary
Climate Cycles are in the frontier of climate science and are, in this sceptic's opinion, the primary cause of our long and short-term climate fluctuations, including today's period of slight but not alarming global warming. 50 years ago we knew virtually nothing about them. Now new discoveries are being made which are shedding light on the past, including of course what happens in Ice Ages. You will learn all about them in later lessons.
